 note = {This paper elucidates the modality of dative alternation and its corresponding double object construction. At first I explain double object construction, to-dative construction and for-dative construction. Next, I investigate to-double object construction (to-DOC) and show that the element of the first argument has to "possess" that of the second argument and speaker or the subject has to "intend" to move the second object. Therefore, the first argument should be animate. Secondly I investigate for-double object construction (for-DOC) and state that the process of movement should be for the benefit of the first argument and only the first argument will have some "confidence" in the act of that movement. Thirdly I explain differences between to-DOC and for-DOC. It is crucially important that on to-DOC we have to consider the volitionality of both speaker and arguments, whereas on for-DOC we can consider only that of arguments. Also I try to show the syntactic and semantic structure of these constructions. Finally, according to the statement by Nakau (1994), I insist that the concept of modality should be divided into two, discourse modality and propositional modality, and the former corresponds to to-DOC and the latter corresponds to for-DOC.},
