In Sogo Gakka students choose subjects according to their interests and prospective careers from a list of elective subjects containing both general and specialized subjects. Thus far numerous studies have examined students' subject choices. However, little attention has been paid to how learners give meaning to the contents of the curriculum and how they perceive the relevance of their subjects to their careers. Therefore, this study analyzes the results of a questionnaire given to graduates of a senior high-school Sogo Gakka, focusing on their perceptions of the relevance of general and specialized subjects. Data was collected from 230 respondents at 9 Sogo Gakka. Analyzing the questionnaire, I attended to the function of the Keiretsu, which are sets of subjects from which students make their choice. The working hypotheses of this research were as follows: (1) in Sogo Gakka, the division between general and specialized subjects would be maintained by the Keiretsu. Thus there would be a difference in the perceptions of the relevance of subjects between graduates who had chosen mainly general subjects and graduates who had chosen mainly specialized subjects; (2) even though there would be a difference as above, common aspects of perceptions of relevance would be accounted for by the expansion of the choice of subjects presented to the learners. I surveyed (i) graduates' opinions about the value of learning in Sogo Gakka, (ii) the criteria of graduates' subject choice, and (iii) the relevance of graduates' experience in Sogo Gakka to their present studies and work. The following results were obtained. Firstly, graduates who had chosen general subjects mainly perceived relevance from the viewpoint of entering higher education, whereas graduates who had chosen specialized subjects perceived relevance from viewpoint of getting a job or work. This showed that the division between general and specialized subjects was maintained by the Keiretsu in Sogo Gakka and regulated the learners' perceptions of relevance. Secondly, the relevance of experience in specialized subjects to their present circumstances, \"specialized relevance\", was perceived by both higher education entrants and job entrants. This showed that the curriculum in Sogo Gakka provided a common opportunity to perceive \"specialized relevance\" for graduates whether they entered higher education or got jobs.
