To grasp to what extent watching movies in English is familiar to today's Japanese students, a survey was conducted of a total of 137 students of various majors at two national universities. It was found that they most commonly watch movies on a DVD player at home with Japanese subtitles; seeing a movie at theaters is much less common. Few students watch films with an intent to learn English. Moreover, many wish to be able to enjoy watching English movies without Japanese subtitles and a relatively large number of them are ready to make the effort required to gain such proficiency.
