The prefaces in Qin and Han Period took various forms, and this paper comments on the prefaces attached to each section of the books. These prefaces played roles of a list or a table of contents; a written summary; an explanation of the purpose of writing; and a self-praise of the section of a book. A lot of four letter phrases and various rhetoric were used in writing these prefaces. Although this kind of prefaces ceased to exist soon after, probably because the contents of the prefaces were often repeated in the texts of the books, the authors in Qin and Han periods seem to have written these prefaces, without fear of repetition, in order to enhance the value of the books.
